ARE WE EDUCATED

How many of us know the real meaning of education? Education is misunderstood as possession of degrees and sticking the label of qualified to one’s personality. Education has not the mere purpose of giving one a good or satisfactory profession but real education is achieved when a person learns to respect human values, virtues, and
abides by the principles of life. True Education kills narrow prejudices and selfish instincts. The main objective of education actually is harmonious development of our intellectual and moral faculties. Education consists not merely in reading books, getting degrees or acquiring good posts, but, in personal thinking feeling acting and in a
persistent and conscious effort to improve our mind and morals. The educated parents today go to any extent to provide better education to their children. The day a child is admitted to a school, his parents lay stress mainly on his studies, so that the child can score well in the exams. This, they do with the sole aim of making them capable for
competing in different competitive exams in further and entering into professional colleges. But they forget that the education which they are providing is incomplete and cannot make them perfect adults having limited ethical or moral education. The desire to get a degree to the exclusion of everything else casts rather a shabby impact on their personality. It is unfortunate the day we find the percentage of cultural and moral aware educated youth, very less. Not to talk of schools, even the college students are irresponsible. It is often seen when a teacher enters a classroom only a few students get up from their seats as a mark of respect. Or if the teacher is going up or down the stairs no one cares to make way for him/her. Juniors have no respect or regard for seniors. Indiscipline and arrogance is very common. Almost all the desk and walls within the college premises are being made untidy by written on them. Library books are spoiled by tearing pages. Can these students now claim to be educated? The concept of education for majority of students is to pass examination by hook or crook to get certificates. The
indulge in such shameful acts as copying and cheating in order to get degrees. The students instead should gain knowledge in such a way that they are able to apply it in their daily lives. Of course education is not merely dealing with discipline and civic sense but it also has a literary meaning that deals with gaining of knowledge from the subjects which one studies. Every student tries to wear the crown of knowledge but the crown studded with pearls lies only on the head that gain knowledge which is weaved together with wisdom, common-sense, etiquette and
virtues. It is tragic that today’s society which includes more educated people as compares to the past, has become the home of all types of evils. Human values have totally vanished. People have become more materialistic and self-centered. There is keen competition, not for virtues but for wealth .Which has led to corruption and other illegal
means of hoarding wealth. We have lost the basic principle of life i.e. humanity. How many of educated youth stand up from the seat in a bus to provide it to an old or sick man who is standing? Only a few, Why need is being felt for opening up of old-age homes? Because there are cases where the old are being ill-treated or humiliated. It is shameful to know that even most educated persons sometimes act in a most uncivilized manner. They keep their own houses, gardens etc. clean by simply throwing and dumping their garbage on the roadside, just outside their houses. There are many more examples where the people boasting to be educated actually create indiscipline. Thus the meaning of education should not be infringed. Education is a bountiful sea, it flows towards all who ask for it but it depends on how many buckets of knowledge one is able to fill from it. When an educated person doesn’t
know how to behave properly his education has no value. He is at that time considered to be worse than an illiterate man who is far away from concept of education. It is not written on one’s fore head that he/she is
educated nor is anybody going to carry his qualification certificate all the time with him. It is actually a person’s ethical sense, his etiquette, his behavior and politeness that approve of his being educated. Someone has rightly said, “All men are alike by nature but by education become different”. Real education marks off the savage from the
civilized men.

Education is a multi-fold pathway and those who gain it in a proper way are enriched with whatnot……….
